I really don't care about WotC mini's

Yeah I bought a few when I got back into DMing, but I don't think I really need them.  Eighteen years ago I bought a bunch of lead mini's and painted a few of them, but we never used them in our games.  We didn't even use the counters that came in the revised edition MERP rules.  All the action took place in our heads.  We did play allot of Axis and Allis, and other board games, so we were familiar with counters, they just never showed up in our games.  Now we also never played around a table, but in each others bedrooms, basements and living-rooms sprawled out in a chaotic mess.  I do remember drawing  few tactical maps for a Twilight 2000 game a ran for a while, probably spurred on by the cool maps that came in the second edition box, but there were no mini's or counters representing players or bad guys.

Yeah when we get back to our C&C game tomorrow afternoon I'm bringing my mini's mostly because I'm to busy trying to run the encounters (or Lazy) to try and remember where everyone is.  My problem with mini's is they turn a chaotic melee encounter into a tactical exercise.  Oh well it is what it is, I'll ponder ways to put the chaos back into combat at the table, for now I'm fine with it.

Lazy Sunday

I've been reading blogs, and watching youtube video's all day because momma is too busy to play C&C today so we cancelled and I'm lazy.  Now I'm watching "I'm Still Here" and googleing Phoenix.  Since I started reading X-men when John Byrne knocked it out of the park I wanted to throw some thing up, and I like women with tattoos.  I should go read Icons, because the movie is boring me at this point.

Games I bought in 2010 and games I want to play in 2011

I bought a lot of games in 2010, why you ask?  Some time back in the 90's I sold most of my RPG collection.  I don't remember the lame excuse I made up at the time there you have it, so this year I did my best to rebuild said collection.  Oh and I bought new stuff that looked cool.  Obviously I bought way to much last year, time to cut back, and I've decided if I'm going to collect RPGs I'm going to stick to non TSR first edition box sets.  I've got my eye on some of the Chaosium catalog.

Stuff I know I bought:
Most of the AD&D hardcovers (I still had my 2e stuff)
Mentzer's Basic, expert and Companion boxed sets
A bunch of AD&D modules (these weren't replacements I just wanted them)
A bunch of Palladium games
2 complete sets of TMNT and other Strangness
  Palladium fantasy and supplements
  Ninjas and Superspies
nWOD
  Hunter
  Mage
Amber Diceless Role-playing
  Shadow Knight
Death Valley free prison
Atomic Highway
  Irradiated Freaks
Dogs in the Vineyard
Barbarians of Lamuria
  Barbarians of the Aftermath
Dresden Flies your world and our world
Savage Worlds Explorers edition
  SW supers
  SW Fantasy
Silver Age Sentinels
The Dying Earth
Rolemaster
MERP, and some supplements
Mouse Guard
Burning Wheel
Icons
Mutants and Masterminds 2e
Twilight 2000 and a few supplements
2300 AD
Mega Traveler
Star Wars Revised ed (WotC)
Shadows of Yesterday
Starblazer Adventures
Legends of Anglerre
Hamlets Hit Points

I bet I missed a few.  Obviously I didn't read everything, most of the books I just wanted to have, yes I am a consumer.  Some I started reading and gave up on after a couple of pages or chapters I've want to play rules lighter games and GDW products are not rules light.

So what do I want to play this year:

Atomic Highway for the low freak P.A. junkie I am.
Barbarians of Lamuria or some other pulpy low magic fantasy game.
Dresden Files to off set the low magic pulp game.
Starblazer Adventures because FATE games are cool, and I love me some syfy.
I really want to play a heroes game I just haven't found one to love.  When my buddy asked me to run a game I seriously thought about Palladiums Heroes Unlimited, maybe I should read Icons.

I read in Fred Hicks blog if you want to play more you have to run more, I guess I'm running.

Light reading while in Utah

I wrote this about Atomic Highway which I brought with me to Utah for Thanksgiving for some getaway reading.  Super glad I did, it has been a great read, and looks like it'll be a fun system to run and play.  My read on the V6 engine is storyteller light, use d6's instead of ten's but you never roll mitt full of them most PC's will never roll more than four.  Character creation, vehicle construction are fairly easy to understand while the concepts and tropes are familiar for the low fantasy radioactive future.

Yeah there are mutants, but this isn't Gamma World (which I am itching to play), the mutations are more like Costner's character in Water World than the gonzo mutations in TMNT Road Hogs, and Mutant Future etc.  Don't get me wrong, I loved the Road Hogs games my buddy Chris ran, but I prefer my Post Apocalypse sicience fiction these days more along the lines of The Postman (yeah I know it's cheesy), The Book of Eli, even I am Legend.

I'm thinking Atomic Highway will soon be played at our gaming table.

Stuck on the Astral Plane.

Our Saturday night DM ended the game on the edge of a huge cliffhanger this week.  We have been, I think running through Scourge of the Slave Lords, or Secrets of the Slavers Stockades although heavily modified by the DM.  Anyway midway through the evening we find a stairway down to a lower level.  We were almost immediately set upon by an Arial Servant, that attempted to scoop up Ryoon our elven archer,  luckily he was able to break free, after a short engagement our Mage Horis wasn't so lucky.

We raced after Hoiris, and quickly fell into an ambush.  An evil somethingorother dude zapped Rufio our rogue into an unknown portal, and proceeded to electrocute us with a fancy Bronze Dragon helm, ouch!  I forget who got the best of the evil dude, but when they did the Arial Servant opened some sort of portal back to the astral plane.  The group wanting/hoping to save Rufio hastily followed the Arial Servant in the vain hope of locating the poor rogue.  What a great cliff hanger, and it was fun.

I got home late, but the next morning after my coffee the first thing I did was pull out my copy of Jeff Grubb's excellent The Manual of the Planes to do a little research, although after I finished the first couple of paragraphs I thought better and closed the book, I'd hate to spoil my own fun.  The fact that we were even battling an arial servant, or ended up on the astral plane was a mystery to us until the end of the session when the DM let it slip we were all on the same plane then spilled the rest.  I've never adventured on another plane as a player of a DM so I am excited where we are going.

Between a Roc and an Astral Giant.

I decided to drop out of the Dark Ages: Vampire game, too much stuff going on right now.

I was however shooting in the studio this week and threw a couple of Mini's under the lights.

Busy Two weeks.

I've been crazy busy with my business, and spent four days in Phoenix shooting a match, but we are playing all weekend, Dark Ages on Friday, 2E AD&D Saturday, I'm running C&C Sunday,  and therefore I'll have stuff to say soon.

I went into the match wanting to push hard, and the first day I shot well, day two on the other hand I crashed hard, but managed to pick myself up on day three (really a quarter day).  I ended up 13th. not really where I wanted to be, but I learned a bunch.  My lovely wife photographed all weekend from which I grabbed this and did a quick edit.

On monks and elves.

I mentioned previously that one of the players in our C&C is playing a monk, cleverly named Yoda (I'm thinking the name would have fit a gnome better, the player chose to be human).  As an encouragement to get the players to complete their aspects worksheet I gave them a generous amount of experience points which when combined with the encounter and treasure xp was enough to bump the monk up to third level.  In my opinion one of the coolest monk abilities (gained at 2nd level) is deflection of normal missiles.  When a missile that normally hit the monk they may make a dexterity check.  If the check succeeds the monk deflects the missile and takes no damage.  The monk can only deflect one missile a round, must be aware of the attack, and have a free hand to deflect the missile.

This ability in C&C differs from the AD&D monk where the monk must make a saving throw verses petrification, and there is no mention of the number of missiles that can be deflected.  In my AD&D Players Manual Gygax basically gives the monk a get out of jail free card ... if one were to fail a saving throw they only take one half damage, and no damage if they make the save, however if the spell/ability does not cause damage the effect still happens in the event of a failed save the example given is the gaze of a basilisk still petrifies the monk.  Gygaxien monks are slippery, and while they are comparatively wimpy at lower levels, the monk kicks ass as they level up.

Yoda is also the only none elf in the troupe, I don't particularly care for elves.  Maybe Orlando Bloom's portrayal of Legolas forever turned me off to elves, maybe because I enjoy playing Gygaxien dwarves who don't care for elves, who knows and I don't care, I just don't like elves.  To throw a wrench in the parties works I made the elven characters come from a secretive/secluded nation state, and the humans in the region they are adventuring in are afraid and suspicious of all elves who they share a border with.  I hope the players will struggle with racism and this will lead to interesting role-playing.  Since the group arrived at the Keep yoda has had to interact with most of the NPC's since none of them is willing to speak to the elves.  I am a little worried this will put a bit to much emphasis on Yoda while at the Keep, however I'm hoping this trend will continue where I give each player the spot light for a while and allow them to explore their characters more in-depth.

Tolkien Elves are tough, which is one of the reasons I suppose people like playing elves.  AD&D 1e/2e elves with their infra-vision +1 to hit with long bow or long sword +1 dexterity, basically immune to charm and sleep and on and on.  C&C elves inherit from Gygax most of those traits.  One thing I really like is elves have twilight vision not deepvision (Dwarves, 1/2 orcs. and Gnomes mostly) which finally makes sence to me.  Why would the terrainean elf get the same underground vision as the subterranean dwarf.
